Asking About Direction Before Speed
“What is life?” I hope we will not avoid the question Ecclesiastes asks, but face it ourselves. We dream, build relationships, work, and live busy lives, yet it is easy to miss the chance to consider where we are headed. I think looking first at our direction matters more than simply moving fast.
Ecclesiastes 1:12-13
The Heavy Burdens We All Carry
Life holds joy, but it also brings responsibilities and worries that are not easy to set down. Ecclesiastes does not hide life's toil and pain. Rather than blaming ourselves and assuming that hardship means we are inadequate, I hope we can begin by acknowledging together that all of us live with limitations and burdens.
Ecclesiastes 1:13
The Rest Jesus Spoke Of
Jesus tells those of us who labor under heavy burdens to come to him. I do not want to reduce this invitation to a promise that every problem will disappear at once. As we take a step back from trying to control everything on our own and live in reliance on Jesus, we can gradually learn to find rest in our hearts.

What We Cannot Easily Set Right Ourselves
Ecclesiastes says that what is crooked cannot easily be made straight and that what is lacking cannot be counted. In our relationships, our society, and our own hearts, some things cannot be easily resolved by effort alone. Without turning away from this reality, I would like to share with you the hope that, through Jesus' coming, crooked paths can be made straight and rough ways made smooth.

Receiving Fullness in the Midst of Our Need
As Ecclesiastes shows us, our needs are too many to count. Yet I would like us to look together at the gospel promise that in Jesus Christ we receive wisdom, righteousness, and salvation. This does not mean denying what we lack. It means that we can come to God just as we are, in all our need, and ask for grace.

Hope Along a Road That Is Not Yet Complete
Having faith does not mean that every difficulty in life disappears. We still experience weakness and uncertainty. Even so, I hope we can look toward the new work God will do and walk together on a path where we do not carry today's burdens alone, but rely on Jesus.
