Jesus, Who Heals the Wounded Heart

☕ Take Your Time Here Take a relaxed look through the text, then listen gently to the audio below. Once you have finished listening, take a moment to reflect on your thoughts by answering the 'Points to Ponder' questions at the end.

What marks do wounded hearts leave on our relationships and our lives? Without turning away from that pain, I would like us to look together toward Jesus, who cares for wounded hearts.

What It Means for the Heart to Be Healthy

After a conflict, it takes great courage to be the first to reach out and seek reconciliation. The deeper the wound, the longer even a small comment may trouble us, and even when we want to mend a relationship, we may find it difficult to move. Do we have places like that in our own hearts?

I do not want to judge being hurt as a sign of personal weakness. I would simply like us to consider how deeply the health of our hearts can affect the way we form relationships and live out the teachings of our faith.

Pain That Remains Unresolved

Unresolved wounds can appear in many forms, including anger, misunderstanding, and broken relationships. The pain we receive in close relationships may remain with us the longest, and its effects can extend to us and to the people around us.

For this reason, I would like to encourage us not to neglect the struggles of the heart, but to take them seriously as places in need of healing and care. This does not mean that I am trying to diagnose anyone's experience or prescribe a single method of treatment.

Jesus, Who Came as a Healer

I believe Jesus is a healer who cares not only for the body and soul, but also for the wounded heart. Isaiah 61:1-2 speaks of binding up the brokenhearted and proclaiming freedom to those who are captive.

Wounds of the heart can keep us bound to the pain of the past. I would like to share the hope that Jesus comes with love into those very places and desires our healing.

The Path Forgiveness Opens

When we are hurt, hatred and anger can be natural responses. Without rushing to deny those feelings, I would like us to consider with Matthew 6:14-15 why forgiveness holds such an important place in Jesus' teaching.

The forgiveness I am speaking of does not pretend that harm or wrongdoing never happened. Forgiveness is never an easy process. Even so, I believe it can become a path by which our hearts are gradually released from the hold of hatred.

Honesty and Compassion

As a first step toward forgiveness, what if we honestly brought our pain and sorrow before God? As we decide to move toward forgiveness and ask for compassion toward the other person, we may be able to go a little farther along that path.

Ephesians 4:32 urges us to be kind to one another and to forgive. I share these words with you, but I do not mean to ask you to make a particular decision in a particular relationship when I do not know your circumstances.

Seeing Through the Eyes of Love

Behind someone's wrongdoing, there may also be pain that person has carried. Just as God has shown us compassion, I believe that healing can begin in our hearts when we try to see those who have hurt us with understanding and love.

I do not want to say that every relationship can be easily restored. I simply hope we can keep from hiding our wounded hearts and take time together to consider love and forgiveness.
